Police-Blotter-3head
Dearborn
Woman arrested for drunken driving

A woman was arrested for the second time for operating while intoxicated following an automobile crash at the intersection of Ford Road and Telegraph roads just after 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

Officers responded to the scene of a three-vehicle crash in which two vehicles stopped at the traffic light at Ford were rear-ended by red Chrysler Sebring. Upon arrival, the officers approached the Sebring to speak to the driver, who was still in the vehicle with the driver’s side window down. The officers noted that the woman in the vehicle smelled strongly of intoxicants and that her eyes were bloodshot and glassy and her speech was slow and slurred.

The woman said she had been at a bar in northwest Detroit and was on her way home to Oak Park. She added that she believed she was currently in the area of Seven Mile and Telegraph roads and when asked, said she had had at least six glasses of wine at the bar.

Police administered a field sobriety test, which she failed, and asked the woman if she would submit to a check of her blood alcohol content, which was refused. The woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated and was handcuffed, searched and secured before being transported to the police department. A blood alcohol content test given at the police station showed the woman had a BAC of .23 percent at 2:55 a.m., nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Michigan.

Man pulls fire alarm at Adoba
A 28-year-old man was arrested for setting off the fire alarm without adequate reason at the Adoba Hotel, 600 Town Center Drive, just after 2 a.m. Jan. 1.

Police were called to the scene by security personnel, who had the man in custody who had pulled the fire alarm on the seventh floor. Police arrived and spoke to a security officer, who said he was making his rounds in the hotel on the eighth floor when he heard a commotion. He positioned himself to look down at the seventh floor and observed a man walking to the fire alarm and setting it off.

The security officer made his way to the area, located the suspect, escorted him to the main lobby and notified police. Approaching the man, officers reported that he appeared intoxicated. They attempted to question the man about the incident but he refused to speak.

He was then arrested, handcuffed, searched and secured before being transported without incident to the police department, where he was charged with setting off the fire alarm unnecessarily.

Dearborn Heights
Car vandalized

A man called police to report malicious destruction to property at his house in the 1200 block of Sherbourne Drive just after 2:30 p.m. Dec. 27.

Police arrived and spoke to the victim, who said he parked his 2006 Mercedes Benz E-350 outside his house overnight and discovered that someone had thrown eggs all over the body of the vehicle. Further investigation showed the owner that there was also a large dent in the right front fender and that the hood emblem had been taken from the vehicle. The owner told police that he did not hear or see anything suspicious, but that he had had problems in the past with vandalism.

Police are investigating.

Home invaded
Police were called to investigate a home invasion at an apartment in the 5800 block of Evergreen at 5:24 p.m. Dec. 27.

The victim said she left the apartment about 1 p.m. and returned at 5:15 p.m. and found the front door wide open. She walked through the apartment and saw that the television was on and that her children’s toys were thrown about the living room floor. She said she was sure the television had been off when she had left the apartment. She also said nothing appeared to be missing, unless it was one of the children’s toys.

Police checked the apartment but were unable to find and signs of forced entry. Nothing of evidentiary value was found at the scene.

Melvindale
Pistol magazine found in loaner car

A woman walked into the Melvindale Police Department about 3 p.m. Dec. 28 and turned in a .40-caliber magazine with 12 rounds of ammunition. She told police she was driving a loaner vehicle from Jim’s Collision, 16651 Harper Ave. in Detroit, for about a week before she found the loaded magazine behind the driver’s seat.

She did not know what it was at first and picked it up, she said, then looked at it and tossed it back on the floor before going to police. Police took possession of the magazine and placed it into evidence.

Man arrested after sleeping on stairs
A Gale Gardens apartments resident called police to the 110 block of Gale Boulevard about 8 a.m. Dec. 29 when he found a man sleeping on the staircase between the first and second floors. When officers arrived, the man was still sleeping on the stairs and they asked him if he needed medical attention.

He told police he did not, but he was sleeping on the stairs because he was homeless and did not like homeless shelters. Police said the man was trespassing and then became argumentative with officers.

The man told police he had warrants and police found he had three warrants from Van Buren Township, but Van Buren Township police refused to pick him up. He was released on scene, police said, and would go to a friend’s house.

Riverview
Man caught driving with suspended license

Police officers patrolling north on Fort Street near Sibley Road saw a vehicle traveling with only one working brake light and initiated a traffic stop about 2:25 p.m. Dec. 24. Officers made contact with the driver who provided them with a license, registration and insurance.

A query into the Law Enforcement Information Network showed the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was arrested and his vehicle was parked in a nearby parking lot so police did not tow the vehicle.

He was processed at the station for driving with a suspended license and the non-working brake light. Police said the man posted bond and was released.

Vehicle abandoned near fire hydrant
A tenant of Royal Woods Apartments called police about 8:45 a.m. Dec. 25 and reported an abandoned vehicle that had been sitting for a long period of time. The caller said the vehicle prevented him from leaving his parking space.

Police confirmed the vehicle was abandoned and parked in a fire lane, 15 feet from a fire hydrant. They said the vehicle “obstructed the Fire Department’s clear access to the hydrant” and impounded the vehicle. The license plate was run through the Law Enforcement Information Network which said a Lansing man owned the vehicle and he had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest in Kalamazoo’s 8th District Court.

A ticket was written for where the car was parked and mailed to the address on the man’s registration.

Indianapolis woman arrested for suspended license
A police officer stopped at Fort Street and Pennsylvania Avenue observed a vehicle turn right on a red light at the corner of Fort Street from Pennsylvania Avenue about 5:14 p.m. Dec. 22. The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who said she had an Indiana license but it was not with her.

Police ran her information through the Law Enforcement Information Network which said she had warrant for a seat belt violation and her license was suspended. She was arrested for driving with the suspended license and the vehicle was impounded.

The vehicle’s owner was a passenger and was released on scene. Police said they could not release the vehicle to him because he also had a suspended license.

Trenton
Plate check leads to arrest

Police arrested the 23-year-old driver of a Ford Taurus with an unreadable license plate discovered to have several warrants out for his arrest.

At 10 p.m. Dec. 26, patrol officers observed the 2005 Taurus with snow-covered windows that blocked a paper license plate in rear window. The Taurus was stopped traveling west on Van Horn Road. The officer first observed that the driver was sitting on — not secured by — the seat belt. He told officers he does that so that “the chime doesn’t go off.”

The driver next admitted that he did not have a license. A check with the Law Enforcement Information Network confirmed that his license had been suspended nine times in 2013 from separate traffic incidents, lack of insurance and other misdemeanors from Detroit and Woodhaven. LEIN also revealed that criminal bench warrants were active from Trenton, Rockwood and Brownstown Township.

The driver was taken into custody and Trenton police contacted interested police and court agencies.

Driver passed out near railroad tracks
A woman who had fallen asleep behind the wheel of her 2004 Mercury awoke to find herself parked on Van Horn Road next to railroad tracks.

The woman was woken up shortly after midnight Dec. 19 by two police officers, who had been called to the scene by another motorist who had stopped behind the Mercury and activated emergency lights. Responding officers approached the vehicle, which was determined to be in “drive” while the unconscious driver had her foot on the brake. The officer placed the vehicle in park, removed the keys and awakened the driver.

The woman told police she had an “undiagnosed sleeping disorder.” Police noticed “a strong odor of intoxicants,” and that the woman’s speech was slurred. She admitted to having “some wine” while visiting her grandmother that evening.

Field sobriety tests were taken and failed by the woman, and preliminary breath test results included samples of .17 and .183, more than twice the limit of 0.08 for drunken driving in Michigan.

The woman was transported to the station, her license confiscated, and held until sober.
