JARRETT SKORUP Statistics show that right-to-work states are consistently outperforming non-right-to-work states in important economic measures, including job, income and population growth. The doomsday predictions that surrounded Michigan becoming the 24th right-to-work state have been proven false and should be put to rest. By JARRETT SKORUP During the battle of Michigan becoming a right-to-work state, opponents predicted doomsday scenarios about what would happen to workers and the state. But in each of the most important … [Read more...] about Fears of right-to-work proving false

President Obama’s man-caused disaster
As a defender of the nation’s borders, President Barack Obama is a hell of a pool player. Obama’s recent game in a Denver bar with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper was bright and cheery, as one would expect of a president who didn’t have any depressing visits to frightened ranchers, overwhelmed border agents or desperate migrants on his future itinerary. The first rule in a crisis for any executive is put on his windbreaker and boots and get out on the ground. President George W. Bush didn’t do it soon enough after Hurricane … [Read more...] about President Obama’s man-caused disaster
The ties that unbind
That recent Pew Research Center poll is pretty jarring. We are so politically polarized in this country that nearly one in three “consistently conservative” Americans would be upset if one of his or her children wed a Democrat. For the “consistently liberal” respondents, it was nearly one in four for the opposite wedding. Imagine the new remake of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” How many would be protesting they weren’t really closed-minded, saying, “Some of my best friends are (right wingers/left wingers), but would you want your … [Read more...] about The ties that unbind
MEA upset at having to follow state law
AUDREY SPALDING Rather than trying to keep information from teachers about their rights to resign from the union, the Michigan Education Association should focus on negotiating contracts that don’t contain illegal language and penalize high-performing teachers. Fixing roads with flimsy patches
Guest Editorial As the summer driving season begins, motorists are already navigating overcrowded, pothole-pocked highways and deteriorating bridges. Soon, thanks to a gridlocked Congress, drivers might also contend with abandoned construction sites. The federal Highway Trust Fund is just weeks from running out of money, which would halt a number of road and transit improvements. There’s talk in Washington of various quick fixes. But no consideration is being given to providing the trust fund with the stable income source it so … [Read more...] about Fixing roads with flimsy patches
Secret settlements vs. your safety
Guest Editorial What people don’t know can hurt them — as proven repeatedly by a system of secret justice that has grown up inside the courts. General Motors Co.’s handling of its Chevy Cobalts with faulty ignition switches is the latest example. GM has settled several claims by victims or their loved ones — on the condition that the terms remain secret. Public settlements might have warned everyone of the danger or even forced the company to replace the switches sooner. None of that happened. The cars weren’t recalled until … [Read more...] about Secret settlements vs. your safety
