RIVERVIEW — A woman who has a brother with a history of problems with law enforcement reported Sept. 15 that she was tricked into wiring money for an electronic tether for her brother after a person on the phone tricked her into believing that he had missed a court date.

She sent $1,253 via Venmo, a mobile payment service. The person then called her again and said the amount had been increase because he allegedly fought with and injured a police officer.

However, Venmo flagged and stopped the second attempted transaction.

Her brother has since told her that while he did have a brush with the law, no bond payment was demanded for his release.
