TAYLOR — A woman who was arrested for shoplifting the evening of Sept. 18 at JC Penney, 23000 Eureka Road, was later hospitalized after she expressed suicidal intent.

The woman, who attempted to leave JC Penney without rendering payment for 10 items collectively valued at $549, was detained by loss prevention employees, who had her shoplifting recorded on surveillance camera footage.

When the woman was taken into police custody, she provided a fake name. However, when a police officer checked her purse, they found her driver’s license.

While being transported to the police station, she stated that she wanted to kill herself. During booking, she was placed in a suicide prevention gown by jail staff, and then transferred to Corewell Health Hospital in Taylor for mental health evaluation.

She was cited for retail fraud/theft – second degree, and obstructing police officers for providing false identification.
