RIVERVIEW — A 57-year-old Carleton man driving a white box truck the night of June 20 in the parking lot of Concessi’s Marketplace, 13720 Sibley Road, sideswiped a white Ford Fusion, breaking the driver’s side mirror, while the person was sitting atop their car watching the Summerfest fireworks.
The man, who appeared to be inebriated, abandoned his vehicle and took off running toward Fort Street. Several people shot video of the man fleeing, and police later apprehended him outside a nearby fast-food restaurant.
The man, who smelled of intoxicants, was unsteady on his feet, and had slurred speech and glossy eyes. He had difficulty retrieving his driver’s license, and admitted to having had several beers at Riverview’s Summerfest.
He admitted to being drunk, and refused to submit to standardized field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody, and refused to submit to a preliminary breath test at the police station.
A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw, and he resisted leaving his cell. He was then taken to Corewell Health Hospital in Trenton, where he again refused to cooperate, and had to be restrained for the blood draw.
Back at the police station, he refused to cooperate with booking procedures.
In addition, his box truck was found to be uninsured.
