DEARBORN – Die hard fans of the annual Detroit Symphony Orchestra Salute to America concert at Greenfield Village either endured heat or rain to pursue their Independence Day weekend tradition.

The event opened July 2 with a significant heat index, and was canceled July 3 due to severe weather. Storm systems also impacted the July 5 event.

For those who were able to attend the event undeterred by storms, the pre-show activities provided musical performances throughout the village, with pianist Taslimah Bey playing ragtime music near the Edison statue and the DSO Youth Jazz Band playing at the Central Market pavilion.

The 1st Michigan Colonial Fife and Drum Corps paired up with the Dodworth Saxhorn Band near the front of the Ford Motor Co. building before marching down Main Street to entertain other attendees.

The DSO performed on the main stage, beginning at 8:30 p.m. with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” Michael Abel’s “Unbound,” an “Armed Forces Salute” and Peter Boyer’s “American Mosaic” in the first act.

The second act offered Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide” and Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” complete with canon fire.

Sousa marches then accompanied the fireworks.
