SOUTHGATE — A 34-year-old man who was accused of shoplifting at Meijer, 16300 Fort St., was fatally shot the afternoon of June 27 in the parking lot when he produced a sharp object and advanced toward responding police officers.
Life-saving measures were immediately initiated and the man was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
A 42-year-old woman who was with him was taken into custody, but has since been released.
No police officers were hurt during the incident, which has been turned over to the Michigan State Police for investigation.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
