TAYLOR — A man who tried to steal money from the cash drawer at Walgreens, 20030 Ecorse Road, on the night of June 8 was thwarted by a quick-thinking clerk who closed the cash drawer on his hand.

The store shift lead said the man was loitering outside the store for about 45 minutes before he came inside. He told the employee that he was waiting for a ride.

The man later entered the store and came to the checkout register with a bottle of Mountain Dew. He offered a $5 bill, and when the clerk opened the cash drawer, he reached into it and tried to steal cash.

The clerk then closed the drawer, trapping the man’s hand. Using his other hand, the man then grabbed coins from the drawer and threw it at the clerk in an attempt to free his other hand.

The man then fled the store, leaving the Mountain Dew on the counter. It was later taken by police officers in an attempt to retrieve fingerprints from it.

The would-be thief was a young Black male dressed entirely in black clothing.
