TRENTON — An online con artist tricked a woman on April 28 into sending them $19,200 in Bitcoin.

The victim said that when she was on her personal computer, a message popped up claiming that she was subject to a security breach, and provided a phone number to call.

The person at the call center instructed her to go to a Bitcoin ATM on Jefferson Avenue and to scan the QR code that they would send her online.

She then withdrew $19,200 from her credit union account and used the code per their directions. However, the money was directed to the scammer and not into her own account. The customer service center for the Bitcoin ATM was unable to help her, and she was told to file a police report.
