DEARBORN — Singin Kai Nelson, 18, of Dearborn, was charged with abusing his 2-year-old pet dog, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced.

Dearborn police were dispatched to a residence in the 24000 block of Chicago Street at 9:53 a.m. May 26 for multiple reports of animal abuse. Upon their arrival, Nelson refused to exit the residence. The pit bull mix was removed from the residence and was found to be gravely injured.

Officers subsequently entered the residence and took Nelson into custody.

The dog was transported to Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Services for treatment for a broken skull, a broken nasal cavity, and a broken jaw. Due the severity of the injuries, the dog had to be euthanized.

It is alleged that Nelson physically assaulted the dog multiple times. More complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination.

Nelson was charged with second degree killing or torturing animals, which carries a maximum seven-year penalty.

Nelson was arraigned May 28 in 19th District Court before Judge Sam Salamey and received a $250,000 cash bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 10, and a preliminary examination of the evidence against Nelson is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 17 before Judge Mark Somers.

“Our officers were confronted with an extremely disturbing case of animal abuse, and this level of cruelty will not be tolerated in our community,” Police Chief Issa Shahin said. “We are committed to thoroughly investigating these incidents and holding those responsible fully accountable under the law.”

Charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
