RIVERVIEW — A woman reported April 24 that a check she had written for $664 fell into the wrong hands, with the recipient’s name changed, as well as the amount.

She said she became aware of the theft when she tried to complete a payment transaction and discovered that she had insufficient funds in her account.

The woman’s credit union canceled the account and refunded her money.

She showed an image of the altered check on her phone to the investigating police officer.

It is possible that the check might have been intercepted while it was in the hands of the U.S. Postal Service.
