LINCOLN PARK – Demonstrators placed an “ICE OUT FOR GOOD” banner on the Champaign Road overpass above southbound I-75 during the Jan. 16 evening commute to protest recent Immigration and Custom Enforcement actions.

Despite the cold weather, protestors warmed to their mission to urge people to oppose what they contend are unlawful ICE actions in cities throughout the country.

Downriver United 734 organizer Lorena Ramirez-Baran of Wyandotte said that rain or shine or freezing cold, they still want things to change.

“President Trump is wrong and we want better,” she said. “ICE has overstepped their boundaries, they’re hurting Americans and they are being used against us, and we are out here today to say that we want ICE stopped.”

Ramirez-Baran said recent ICE actions have strengthened the resolve of protestors.

Demonstrator Allison Cole of Wyandotte said she is tired of the nonsense and what is happening across the country.

“It’s unreal: we have a leader who is flipping people off and dropping F-bombs, and he expects our country to act normal,” she said.

Protestor Kathy J. said she is furious at the administration and “wants to see all of them in prison.”

She said she was glad to join with other protestors, despite the cold, because it reminds her that she is not alone in her beliefs.

“I am not the only person who wants to stand up and make this nonsense stop and get America back to the way America is supposed to be,” she said. “America is not supposed to be about armed people breaking in doors and taking away people, especially American citizens, but anybody, without due process.

“I want to see America be America again, where everybody is safe and the law matters.”

Demonstrator Gerry of Brownstown Township said the protestors are “sick and tired of the fascists that are running the country right now.”

“These are the true patriots,” he said, pointing to the other protestors.
