All Dearborn Public Schools buses to be equipped with safety technology to deter reckless driving and keep children safe
DEARBORN – Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and other local officials will unveil a new school bus safety program, the first in the state, that will help detect and penalize drivers that illegally pass stopped school buses.
An estimated 40 million U.S. drivers illegally pass stopped school buses annually, endangering children. Michigan’s issue is acute, with over 2,200 violations found in a single day (nearly 400,000 per school year).
To address this, the city and Dearborn Public Schools are launching the state’s first citywide school bus stop-arm safety program with BusPatrol technology. All district buses will be equipped with stop-arm enforcement cameras. Violations will be recorded and evidence provided to the Police Department, which will manage enforcement and review.
This initiative complements the city’s broader traffic-safety efforts, including increased patrols, traffic calming, and public education to protect children traveling to and from school.
