MELVINDALE – Police Chief Robert Kennaley, who is battling cancer while facing an investigation into the department and a lawsuit from a fellow officer, has resigned.

His resignation and payout were accepted during the Nov. 19 City Council meeting.

Former Allen Park Police Chief Chris Egan is serving as Melvindale’s interim police chief, with newly hired Deputy Chief Daryl Campbell.

City Manager Richard Otriz said Kennaley’s buyout, $38,824, which is contractual, is based on unused vacation, personal and sick days, as well as other allowances, and will not be given in a lump sum check, but distributed in checks similar to payroll checks over time, with Feb. 10 being the last check date.

Kennaley submitted his resignation letter to the Public Safety Commission during its Nov. 11 meeting.
