MELVINDALE – Deputy Police Chief Daryl Campbell updated the City Council about measures being taken to increase youth scooter safety awareness during the Nov. 19 council meeting.

Campbell said a scooter course was done in-house and with Public Safety Commission members.

He said Target will donate $500 to purchase helmets, which will be distributed through the school district to young people who ride scooters.

“That’s a big win for us,” Campbell said. “So, we are going to keep doing that, and anything that we can do to help make this a safer experience for the riders.”

He said the emphasis of the Police Department is on education and not enforcement.
