HEIGHTS – With the departure of former Mayor Bill Bazzi to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, the City Council acted during its Oct. 28 meeting to fill key positions.
Attorney Gary Miotke was reappointed to serve as corporation counsel, replacing Roger Farinha, whom the city council, in conflict with Bazzi, had never approved. The council had retained Miotke as its attorney, and Bazzi had resisted signing checks to pay Miotke for his services.
With Mo Baydoun vacating his council seat to serve as mayor in Bazzi’s stead until the outcome of the Nov. 2 election, Councilmember Robert Constan, whose term was to expire at the end of the calendar year, and who did not run for re-election, resigned his position and was voted to fulfill the last year of Baydoun’s term by the city council.
Former City Councilmember Ray Muscat, who resigned Aug. 21, 2023 for health reason, was elected by the city council to fulfill the last three remaining city council meetings of Constan’s original term of office. Muscat was a logical fit since he was already familiar with city council procedures.
In addition, former interim Police Chief Hussein Farhat was sworn in as the new Ordinance director. His most recent role was that of Dearborn Heights Director of Emergency Management.
