WYANDOTTE – The vibrant work of River’s Edge Gallery co-owner and artist Jeremy Hansen is on display through Nov. 2 in his first solo show at the gallery, 3024 Biddle Ave.
Co-owner Patt Slack said title of the show, “Washing Machine Workout Session,” is a reflection of how complicated life is nowadays.
“His grandmother used to say that, ‘It all comes out in the wash,’ so that’s how he came up with the name of the show,” she said. “It has, I think, something for everybody.”
Slack said Hansen’s work on display is funny, tragic, beautiful and ugly.
“It’s just kind of messages all over the place,” she said.
Slack said she’s had the gallery for 45 years, and Hansen has been with her for 21 years.
“He’s shown all over the world, but he’s never shown here,” she said. “So, this is his first one-man show ever in this location and he’s been gallery director for most of those years.”
Slack said Hansen often incorporates found objects in his art.
“A lot of things you’ll find that he’s painted on, he found someplace,” she said. “His paints – he goes from acrylic to oil to watercolor to chalk – he uses whatever he feels he needs to have it say what it needs to say.”

Slack said they have talked about Hansen doing a solo show at the gallery for several years.
“Finally, one day, he just took a date,” she said. “I think he’s going to do very well. He just went all out. He shows every spectrum that he does, so you can see a full range of who he is and what he does.”
Hansen said he just decided to do a solo show at the gallery recently.
“I thought this year was a good time and people encouraged me to go for it,” he said.
Hansen said he prefers to let his work speak for itself.
“‘It is what it is,’ even though I hate that statement,” he said. “I’m not too concerned about what the public’s perception is.”
Hansen said he just does the work, for which he says there is “no rhyme or reason,” and he uses what is available.
He said he’s honored by the turnout, humbly suggesting that the gallery is the reason they attended his solo show opening.
“I have some friends here, that is really cool, but I really haven’t had a minute to drink it all in yet,” he said. “That’s just the thing: I have to celebrate the gallery; I can’t just celebrate my stuff and let the other stuff get by the wayside.
“We have so many great artists here, and I’m just honored to be a part of it.”
