DEARBORN – Mirroring recent state law updates allowing camera-based school bus traffic enforcement, the city updated its ordinance to cite drivers who ignore school bus stop signs during student pickup and dropoff.
The first public reading, during the Sept. 9 City Council meeting, adds language to allow camera-based enforcement when drivers fail to stop for a school bus displaying a side-mounted stop sign during student dropoff and boarding, with citations mailed to offenders.
First offense fines would be $250, with $500 fines for repeat offenses.
Police officers would review the stop-arm camera footage prior to the issuance of any citations. A portion of the subsequent fines will help pay for the manpower needed to review school bus camera footage to support enforcement.
The camera-based enforcement will protect school children from being hit by drivers who disregard stop signs and pass stopped school buses.
