ALLEN PARK – Allen Park High School track coaches Andrew and Matt DeHann and Zack Murray were honored during the July 22 City Council meeting for saving the life of student Alyssa Atkinson.

During track team tryouts March 12, Atkinson collapsed after her timed run. The coaches calmly performed CPR, used an automated external defibrillator and called for emergency responders.

Police Chief Eron Feltz said the coaches’ immediate and decisive actions undoubtedly made a profound difference in Atkinson’s outcome.

“It is my firm belief that had it not been for their quick response and collaborative efforts during this highly stressful and unexpected medical emergency, the outcome for Alyssa could have been tragic,” he said.

Atkinson was treated at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and made a full recovery.

Feltz said the coaches’ actions exemplified selflessness, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of their students.

Atkinson said it was difficult to put into words how thankful she was for their lifesaving response.

“What happened at track practice was not only scary, but traumatizing,” she said. “I still don’t remember much of it, but I know you helped save my life.”

Atkinson said her coaches were brave and worked together without hesitation.

“Because of that, I am still here,” she said. “You didn’t just help me, you gave me a second chance, and there is no way I can thank you enough for that.”
