TRENTON – Library Director Donna Jensen described a pollinator meadow that the library will create and maintain in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services west of the library.

The meadow will be bounded on the west by the Frank and Poet Drain and by the Veterans Memorial Library on the east.

The project will cost the city about $1,200, USFWS will provide $1,200, and the project will rely on volunteer hours to make its completion possible.

Students from Trenton High School and from garden clubs in Trenton, Brownstown Township, Grosse Ile Township and Woodhaven have already expressed an interest in helping out on the 0.55-acre plot.

The USFWS identifies projects that help restore habitats on private lands, and helps groups understand what is needed to restore a habitat.

The local team will prepare the site for seeding, while the USFWS will provide a diverse native grass and flowering grass seed mix that will enhance the area for pollinators, migratory birds and other wildlife.

Herbicide will be used to remove non-native invasive plants prior to seeding.

Occasional mowing will be done to maintain the site. The project is estimated to have a 10-year timeline.

A project identification sign will provide information and credit the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
