23rd District Court to host Law Day May 1

April 22, 2025 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

TAYLOR — The 23rd District Court will host its fourth annual Law Day on May 1. The 2025 Law Day theme “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One” urges everyone to take pride in a Constitution that bridges our differences to bring citizens together.

Students from Taylor School District will be invited to the 23rd District Court to learn about the Constitution, good citizenship, and Americans working together to serve the common good. The Police Department, Taylor Department, Michigan State Police and several other state and federal agencies are participating in the event.

“As Americans we have the shared privilege and duty to work together to move our democracy forward,” Chief Judge Victoria Shackelford said. “The Preamble to the Constitution, establishes with ‘We the People’ should work to form a more perfect union. It is vital we teach our children to participate in their democracy and work with others they may have differences with for the benefit of the common good. I am hopeful learning the importance of good citizenship early in life will leave a lasting impression on Taylor students.”

During the event, displays and booths will be set up from various agencies such as the Police Department, Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Drug Enforcement Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detroit Metro SWAT Airport Police, Neighborhood Defenders Office, Wayne County Prosecutors Office, the Taylor Federation of Teachers, Corewell Health and more.

“We are all very excited at the court about this year’s Law Day celebration,” Shackelford said. “The Constitution’s focus on collaboration for the common good to create a more perfect union will run throughout the student’s day at the courthouse and in the classrooms leading up to the event. The students will also engage in activities that require them to work together while at the courthouse.”

“The theme of this year’s Law Day is essential to what makes our democracy great. Our democracy is only truly successful when we are able to celebrate our differences and unite for the common good of all citizens,” Taylor School District Supt. Michael Wegher said.

“I am excited to again see that through our continued partnership with Judge Shackelford and the 23rd District Court, that we can instill in our students the important virtues of unity, cooperation, and compromise. These are all virtues that are essential to our democracy, as well as virtues that will help our students to see success in their personal lives as well.”

The event will be held at the courthouse and be open to all third-graders. Shackelford looks to continue Law Day into the future and believes the judicial system should play a role in encouraging young people to be involved in their communities.
