HEIGHTS – Police Chief Kevin Swope has accepted the top job in South Haven effective Jan. 6, with Deputy Police Chief Hussein Farhat stepping into the top Dearborn Heights police leadership spot.
Farhat is a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, and served as the city’s Emergency Management director before becoming deputy police chief.
Mayor Bill Bazzi said he was disappointed to see Swope leave, but praised his leadership skills and his operational improvements.
“He is, without a doubt, leaving our department in a better, more stable and more respected position,” Bazzi said. “I thank him for his service, and wish him nothing but the best in his new position.”
Prior to joining the Dearborn Heights Police Department, where he initially served as the director of Operations, he served with the Westland Police Department as a lieutenant, sergeant and patrol officer, and with the Detroit Police Department as a patrol officer.
Swope received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University, and completed the Police Executive School of Staff and Command at Eastern Michigan University, the Police Executives and New Chiefs’ School from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, and the FBI Law Enforcement Leadership Program’s Executive Leadership Institute.
