HEIGHTS — A man reported Oct. 23 that a check he mailed to pay off a credit card was intercepted, altered, and fraudulently cashed, withdrawing $4,700 from his credit union account.

The victim said he wrote a check for $765.44 to pay off his Mastercard, which he mailed from a U.S. Postal Service box.

When he received a billing statement from his financial institution, Dearborn Federal Credit Union, he discovered that no payment was made on the credit card.

He then learned that the check had been altered, and cashed for $4,700.90 from his account.

The victim said he is currently disputing the transaction and has locked all of his accounts.
