Henry Ford College Voter Engagement Bash encourages students to vote

October 3, 2024 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

DEARBORN — Henry Ford College Student Activities has partnered with the University of Michigan-Dearborn Office of Student Life and Turn Up Turnout to host the Voter Engagement Bash from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center on the main campus, 5101 Evergreen.

The free, public event is in partnership with the Michigan Department of State, ACCESS, and the League of Women Voters.

Michigan Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie will deliver the keynote address. ACCESS Civic Engagement Manager Shams Al-Badry and Laura Dudgeon of the LWV will also speak.

“With the November 5 national and statewide elections quickly approaching, HFC is pumping up excitement about participating in our democratic process,” HFC Director of Student Activities Cassandra Fluker said.

The Voter Engagement Bash is a civic engagement program to help students understand the importance of voting and their voting rights. Other program highlights include voter registration, a mock polling place, voter resources, activities, giveaways, and refreshments. For many students, this is the first opportunity to vote.

To vote in Michigan, people must be registered and at least 18 years old by Election Day. Methods and requirements for voter registration depend on the following deadlines:

• If there are 15 or more days before an election, registration may be done online, by mail, or in person.

• Within 14 days of an election and on Election Day, registration may be done only by visiting the local clerk’s office to register in person with proof of residency documentation.

For questions or more information about the Voter Engagement Bash, contact event organizers Kayla Collins at [email protected] or Zena Aljilehawi at [email protected].
