HEIGHTS – Dearborn Heights Police officers recently concluded another successful “Youth Leadership Experience” event.

During the four-day event which concluded Aug. 9 – the second hosted by the department this summer – 15 local teens gained an in-depth look at several elements of law enforcement operations. Nearly all of the sessions were held at the Dearborn Heights Justice Center.

During the event, several DHPD officers provided hands-on demonstrations highlighting various responsibilities and tasks today’s law enforcement officers are required to possess, including:

• Team building

• Impaired driving awareness

• Defensive tactics

• K9 demonstration

• Firearms safety

• Physical fitness

• Conflict resolution

• Vehicle and building searches

• CPR/First Aid

• Criminal investigations

• Crime scene techniques

• Investigative skills

• Cyber safety

Police Officer Khalil Hojeij said the event is a valuable eye-opener for the youths.

“It gives the students a real-world look at how police departments operate, and a better appreciation for the types of day-to-day activities today’s officers encounter,” Hojeij said. “They come away with a greater awareness of what it takes to be an police officer – which is particularly valuable for those who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.

“Many of the students are surprised to learn how complex the profession has become, and how varied the skills and knowledge base one must have in order to be a successful law enforcement officer.”

The department is considering hosting more sessions, and will provide public announcements regarding their availability as they are scheduled.
