Motorcycle abandoned by drunken driver

SOUTHGATE — An intoxicated man who wiped out on a borrowed 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle at 3 a.m. July 16 on Dix-Toledo Road initially called for helped, admitting he was drunk and needed help returning a borrowed motorcycle.

The man must have later realized that an encounter with police officers in his inebriated state would not go well, and he took off, likely on foot, before they arrived.

After police officers ran the motorcycle license plate through the Law Enforcement Information Network, they called the registered owner, who told police officers the name of the man who had taken it for a spin. She said he had called her and said he’d “laid the bike down” and was on his way to the hospital.

A check of local emergency rooms did not indicate that the man had checked in to any of them, and his cell phone continued to go straight to voice mail.

The motorcycle was then impounded and taken off site.
