TRENTON — A man whose sole income is from Social Security filed a police report July 1 after the Internal Revenue Service mailed a letter to him suggesting that a 2023 tax return filed in his name might be fraudulent.
The complainant said he has not filed a tax return since 2020 because of his circumstances.
He was able to prevent the IRS from mailing a refund check to the identity thief at an address that was not his.
The victim did not suffer any financial loss.
