MELVINDALE — A 24-year-old man was taken into custody the night of July 18 following a foot chase after police officers arrived to find an abused  woman bleeding and in tears.

The victim, who lives in the 17900 block of Reed Street, said the man, who is the father of her children, would not leave her residence and was attempting to steal her car. She said he had a history of domestic violence.

When police officers talked to the woman, she said the man took a hammer she had grabbed for protection and struck her in the back of the head with it. She said he also punched her in the side of the face and in the mouth.

A police officer photographed her injuries. She refused medical treatment, but was given information on domestic violence resources.

After his unsuccessful attempt to flee, the man was arrested and taken into custody.
