MELVINDALE — A traffic stop for an improper license plate at 12:40 a.m. Feb. 6 resulted in the arrest of a passenger for outstanding felony warrants, citations for the driver, and the impounding and towing of the unregistered, improperly plated vehicle.
When the traffic stop was initiated after a turn made without signaling, the police office noticed furtive moves among the passengers, so they called for back-up. When another police officer arrived, the three occupants were ordered out of the vehicle.
A large knife was discovered on the floor of the car. One of the passengers was in possession of a glass crack pipe, and a record check revealed he had numerous outstanding arrest warrants, including a felony warrant from Van Buren Township.
Another glass crack pipe was found in the center front console, and the driver admitted that it belonged to her. She was ticketed for having drug paraphernalia, for having an unregistered vehicle and for the improper license plate.
The man who had the crack pipe in his pocket was then seen trying to chew on something, and he admitted to not feeling well. It was suspected that he tried to hide evidence of crack cocaine by swallowing it.
He was taken to a nearby hospital and given Narcan to counteract any drugs in his system. When he was released from the hospital, he was taken into custody and turned over to Van Buren Township police for a felony arrest warrant.
