HEIGHTS – Outgoing City Councilmember Zouher Abdel-Hak was honored by his peers during the Jan. 9 council meeting for “leaving a lasting mark on Dearborn Heights.”

Councilmember Hassan Ahmad called him “a man of remarkable character.”

He said Abdel-Hak has lived in Dearborn Heights for 32 years and has remained steadfast in his commitment to the city’s prosperity.

Ahmad said Abdel-Hak was a familiar face at council and school board meetings for two decades, demonstrating an enduring passion for civic engagement.

He said Abdel-Hak served on the housing commission and the zoning board of appeals, playing a pivotal role in shaping the city’s policies.

In 2020, Abdel-Hak was appointed by the City Council to serve as the interim city treasurer, which Ahmad said showcased his competence and the council’s trust.

In 2021, Ahmad said Abdel-Hak was appointed to the city council, bringing a wealth of experience with him to the role, as well as genuine passion for the well-being of the community.

In September 2023, Abdel-Hak was called upon to fill a council vacancy a second time.

Ahmad called the appointments a testimony to the trust placed in Abdel-Hak’s abilities and the community’s confidence in him.

“It is an honor to present this proclamation to a man whose journey embodies the spirit of service to community and a spirit of dedication,” he said. “Let us express our deepest gratitude to a leader who has not only shaped the past but who continues to inspire a brighter future for Dearborn Heights.”

Abdel-Hak thanked the council and said it was always a pleasure to work with the body.

“It is always my pleasure to help you if you need anything,” he said. “This city is my home and my children and grandchildren’s home. I wish you good luck in the next few years.”
