RIVERVIEW — A 37-year-old Brownstown Township man was arrested at 12:50 a.m. Nov. 12 for operating under the influence of liquor after he fell asleep behind the wheel while stopped at a traffic light on southbound Fort Street at Sibley Road.

A motorist called 911 and reported that the man had failed to move after the traffic light had sequenced several times.

A responding police officer had to knock on the driver’s window repeatedly before he woke up and was able to pull into a nearby parking lot.

The man, who smelled of intoxicants, admitted to having had five beers earlier at a Wyandotte bar, and said he was headed home.

He failed several of the standardized field sobriety tests and refused to take a preliminary breath test, after which he was taken into custody, while his vehicle was impounded and towed.

At the police station, the man consented to a preliminary breath test, which registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.13, more than the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.
