HEIGHTS — Con artists stole $18,000 from a 66-year-old Dearborn Heights woman’s bank account Sept. 9 when they convinced her to send them that amount in gift cards to initiate an American Express card investigation of fraud on her account.

The victim was told to send the gift card numbers through the “WhatsApp” online function.

People are warned to never send gift card numbers to unknown parties, and to realize that legitimate companies will never ask them to do so.
