MELVINDALE — A New York man who was stalking and stealing from his ex-girlfriend was taken into police custody June 11 following a high-speed chase in which he crashed his vehicle.
The woman he was stalking and her female roommate said the man had entered their residence at Northpointe Condominiums twice and stolen cash, a purse and a cell phone. Police officers had told them to call 911 immediately if he returned.
When he returned June 11, a police officer responded, and when the man spotted the police vehicle, he fled at a high rate of speed, ignoring traffic signals and endangering other drivers.
When the man drove north on Greenfield Road and attempted to turn right onto Rotunda Drive, the man lost control of the car and struck a concrete barrier.
A Dearborn police officer and another Melvindale police officer arrived at the scene to assist the pursuing officer. The fleeing driver was pulled from the vehicle and was taken to Corewell Health Hospital – Dearborn for treatment with a police officer guarding him.
Cash and miscellaneous small items were retrieved from the man’s car before it was impounded and towed.
