HEIGHTS — A scam artist defrauded a 66-year-old Dearborn Heights man out of $1,950 on Sept. 10 by promising that the man would be paid to display vinyl advertisement signs on his vehicle.

The victim, who reported the scam Oct. 7, said he received a $2,950 check, which he was instructed to deposit before sending $1,950 to another business account for materials, while supposedly keeping an initial $1,000 payment for himself.

However, the man’s financial institution soon informed him that the original check was fraudulent, which meant the money he sent to the unknown third party was his own.
