HEIGHTS — Longtime city of Dearborn Heights employee Lee Gavin retired after more than 42 years of service in various positions, including police chief for 10 years.

Mayor Bill Bazzi made the announcement during the Sept. 13 City Council meeting where Gavin received a standing ovation. The meeting was the last one for Gavin, who was tuned in via Zoom.

Gavin thanked everyone and said it has been a good ride.

“I’ve been here for over 42 years, started as police cadet,” he said. “So, this is my community, I still love it. I want to thank everyone for the job they’re doing, we’re all in it together to make our community the best we can. I’ve had a good career. I’ve worked with all of you, and I appreciate the mayor for keeping me aboard. Thanks for your support over the years.”

At the time of his retirement, Gavin held the title of Dearborn Heights Emergency Manager. Public Information Officer Robert Ankrapp will replace Gavin, Bazzi said.

Council Chair Dave Abdallah thanked Gavin for his service and commitment to the city.

“I’ve had many, many conversations, dialogue, phone calls and face-to-face and of course talking Lions talking to you,” he said. “I thank you for everything you’ve done and anybody that can put in 42 years into service for their residents, they’ve got my salute.”

Councilman Mo Baydoun congratulated Gavin on his retirement, and said he will be missed.

“I truly appreciate your service to the city of Dearborn Heights,” he said. “A lot of things you’ve said really embedded in me and echoed across my actions on things throughout my service.”

Before working as emergency manger, Gavin served as police chief for 10 years from 2008 to 2018 before retiring from that position.

Gavin began working with the Police Department as police cadet in 1980. A lifelong resident of the city, he is graduate of Crestwood High School.

Also, Gavin holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in Liberal Studies degree from Eastern Michigan University. He is also a graduate of EMU’s School of Police Staff and Command.
