LINCOLN PARK — The state of Michigan awarded $128,625 to the city of Lincoln Park May 20 through the First Responder Training and Grant Program.

Mayor Thomas Karnes said the funds will help the city recruit and train qualified first responders for the city’s police and fire departments by providing money for police and fire academy training tuition, as well as signing and referral bonuses.

Police Chief Ray Watters said the grant will help address the city’s long-standing recruiting challenges.

“The city of Lincoln Park has had a difficult time recruiting qualified candidates for police officer positions,” he said. “It is hoped this grant will help the city improve public safety in the community.”
