DEARBORN — Fordson High School graduate Ahmed Altaii, 19, of Dearborn died after he fell from the seventh-floor balcony of his hotel room in Cancun, Mexico, about 10 p.m. local time March 9, according to the Mexican Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and Transit.

Altaii was staying at the GR Solaris Hotel during a spring break trip with his girlfriend and friends at the time of his death. According to The Yucatan Times, “The girlfriend of the now deceased, also from the United States, mentioned that her boyfriend started drinking early in the day.”

WWJ News Radio reported that a video was posted on social media — which has since been removed — shows Altaii sitting on the balcony when he appeared to be accidentally bumped by another man.

“Mexican authorities say they have contacted the family and will conduct an autopsy and toxicology report in the coming days to determine the cause of death,” according to WWJ.

Altaii played varsity football at Fordson High School, graduating in 2017, and was attending Henry Ford College when he died.

Grief counselors will be available at FHS March 11 for grieving students and staff. A candlelight vigil was held at Ford Field Park March 10 where friends of Altaii shared stories about him.

Visitation and funeral arrangements for Altaii are still unknown, but a GoFundMe site was set up to help his family. As of the evening of March 10, $7,993 of the $10,000 goal was raised by 186 people in 13 hours.
