ALLEN PARK — The Peterson family of Howe-Peterson Funeral Home spent a beautiful summer evening together at the family cottage on Walloon Lake July 1.

“My nieces Kathleen and Madeline had just driven my mom from Dearborn to join us for a lovely family gathering,” said Kerrie Peterson, former president and CEO of Howe-Peterson. “We had such a great time visiting and recalling old memories, laughing and carrying on together. In a gentle turn of events, later that evening, with loved ones at her side, my mom passed.”

Peterson said it was the peaceful end to a journey that began three years ago when Dorothy “Dottie” Peterson suffered a severe heart attack, complicated by other medical conditions. At that time, Kerrie Peterson quickly became her mom’s primary caregiver.

Peterson shared how she struggled to be both daughter and caregiver while continuing to oversee the family business.

“Dr. Anca Froman of Beaumont was our primary care doctor in Dearborn,” Peterson said. “When I told her how difficult it was for me to be both daughter and caregiver, she told me about Senior Care Solutions.”

Peterson and her mom soon met with Marcia Filek, geriatric care manager of Senior Care Solutions in Allen Park. Filek conducted a detailed geriatric care assessment that included spending time alone talking with the senior Peterson.

Each assessment also includes an evaluation of daily living and social activities, health and psychological status, environment and safety concerns, home management needs, and more.

“Following our assessment, we worked with Kerrie and her mom to find a solution that kept Mrs. Peterson safe and comfortable at home, and gave Kerrie peace of mind, especially when she was out of town,” said Filek, who accompanied Dorothy Peterson to all of her doctor appointments, insured the doctors answered all of her questions and that the doctor’s instructions were clear. Filek also gave regular updates to Kerrie Peterson.

“I can’t think of enough words to convey how much Marcia helped the quality of both of our lives during the past two years,” Peterson said. “She allowed me to be my mom’s daughter and just have fun together — including our final visit that left us with such peace.”
