HEIGHTS — New sounds and familiar sights will be returning to the 31st annual Spirit Festival June 7 to 11 at the Canfield Community Center, 1801 N. Beech Daly.

This year’s theme “Saluting the Beatles — 50 years of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band” was thought up by Parks & Recreation Director Ken Grybel.

A Rod Stewart tribute, which is new to the festival this year, will take place by Danny D’s at 5:30 p.m. June 10.

“I love the way Danny sings and the type of Rod Stewart songs he sings,” Spirit Fest Entertainment Chairman Gerry Willemse said about the tribute. “I’m excited about having him at the festival this year.”

Steve King & the Dittilies will perform  at 6:30 p.m. June 9 and metropolitan Detroit Journey tribute band Captured Detroit will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. June 10.

The festival will close out with Toppermost, a Downriver Beatles tribute band beginning at 6 p.m. on June 10.

Mayor Daniel Paletko will host the annual Mayor’s Walk at 2:30 p.m. June 10, with registration at 2 p.m. at the main entertainment tent. A free festival T-shirt will be given to the first 125 entrants.

The annual salute to the past and present military will feature the Ford Chorus from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on June 10.

For the 25th year, the Taste of the Heights food fest will highlight food from restaurants in the area from 5 to 6 p.m. June 8. Admission for adults is $6, children ages 3 to 12 cost $4 and children under 3 are free.

This year’s community night is set to have local talent from all schools within Dearborn Heights along with Divine Child High School in Dearborn.

Jazz bands, choruses and cheerleaders from the Divine Child, Robichaud, Riverside and Crestwood will show off their talent from 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 8.

“I usually start my planning for the festival in January and then have my bands and entertainment in place by March,” Willemse said. “It’s a process, but rewarding once it’s all in place.”

The Spirit Fest will again feature an amusement ride midway with daily pay-one-price ride bands each day.

The annual sneak preview night will be from 4 to 10 p.m. June 7 at $14 where a $4 off ride coupon is provided.

On June 8 the price is $18, $20 on June 9 and $25 each for June 10 and 11. Rides will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. June 8, 3 to 11 p.m. June 9, noon to 11 p.m. June 10, and noon to 10 p.m. June 11.
