Detroit Lions to host football camps at Allen Park training facility

ALLEN PARK — Football players in Wayne County have an opportunity to learn from the pros this summer, as the Detroit Lions host a series of summer football camps at their team headquarters and official training facility in Allen Park.

The Lions will be host a four-day Fundamentals Camp July 10 to 13, a Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers Academy July 14 and a pair of two-day specialty camps designed for middle and high Schoolers — a quarterbacks/wide receivers academy and an offensive line/defensive line academy — July 15 and 16.

The Fundamentals Camp contains two days each of offensive and defensive instruction, focused on high energy, non-contact drills and skills competitions designed to teach football fundamentals and improve campers’ understanding of the game. The camp also focuses on character development, with an emphasis on the Detroit Lions’ five Points of Pride, and teach USA Football’s shoulder tackling system, designed to reduce serious head injuries during play.

The Friday and weekend academies are more specialized, with participants focusing their learning and efforts on one particular position for the duration of the camp.

There will be a coach for every 10 athletes at the camp, and a current or former Detroit Lions player also will make an appearance at the camp. The Fundamentals Camp is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 14, the Friday QB/WR academy is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14, and the weekend academy camps are open to boys and girls ages 11 to 18.

Cost is $189 for the four-day camp as well as the weekend specialty camps. The Friday QB/WR camp is $105. Each registration includes two tickets to a 2017 home Detroit Lions preseason game.
