MELVINDALE – Two men were arraigned Oct. 6 in 36th District Court in Detroit for the death of Amanda Benton, 29, of Melvindale following charges brought Oct. 5 by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jacob Barnes, 23, of Lincoln Park and Jeremy Lee, 16, of Detroit, who is being charged as an adult, were both charged with felony murder, first degree murder, assault of a pregnant individual causing the death of a fetus, and mutilation of a dead body.

They will appear before Judge Lydia Nance Adams at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13 for a probable cause hearing, followed by a 9 a.m. Oct. 18 preliminary examination of the evidence against them at the courthouse, 421 Madison in Detroit.

The family believes Benton, who was five-and-a-half months pregnant and was to have entered rehab the day she went missing, had gone to Detroit to buy heroin.

A witness described the suspects and carjacking at Woodmere and Cabot in Detroit, where she was beaten by two men and thrown in the trunk of her car.

Her body was burned and abandoned in a vacant house in the 8000 block of Vanderbilt.

The car, a 1995 green Dodge Neon, was found at Pitt and Norman in southwest Detroit. Her empty purse was found several blocks away at Vernor and Ferris, with her identification and cell phone missing.
