‘Summer Camp at The Center’ begins June 20

DEARBORN — Registration is underway for the Dearborn Recreation & Parks Department’s “Summer Camp at the Center” at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave.

Tailored to children ages 5 to 11, “Summer Camp at The Center” is divided into eight, one-week sessions — each of which has a special theme — and features both indoor and outdoor activities, such as active group games, arts and crafts, rock wall climbing and swimming in the leisure pool.

Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional child care is available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m. at a cost of $3 per half hour.

All camp counselors are either certified elementary school teachers or university students majoring in education, and the camper-to-counselor ratio is 10-1.

Registration, which takes place at the service desk of the Ford Center, includes submission of a copy of the child’s birth certificate, a health form and a liability waiver, as well as either a $25 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit or payment in full.

Parents remitting the $25 deposit — along with the required paperwork — can reserve a spot for their child in any of the eight sessions. The deposit will be applied toward the total registration cost when the remaining balance is paid, which must be no later than the Friday before the child’s camping session begins.

This summer’s themes include Camp Goes Hollywood Week, June 20 to 24; Fantasy Fun Week, June 27 to July 1; Amazing Americans Week, July 5 to 8; Move & Groove Week, July 11 to 15; Super Heroes Week, July 18 to 22; Out of this World Week, July 25 to 29; Cruisin’ Through the Decades Week, Aug. 1 to 5; Water Wipeout Week, Aug. 8 to 12.

Cost per week is $140 for passholders, $170 for residents and $200 for non-residents. Siblings receive a $20-per-week discount.

Campers once again will have the opportunity to take optional weekly field trips, costing $20 apiece. A minimum of 30 campers are required for each field trip, and participants must wear a camp T-shirt, provided at no cost.

This summer’s field trips include bowling at Ford Lanes (Week 2), Zap Zone (Week 3), Detroit Zoo (Week 4), Pump It Up (Week 5), Sky Zone (Week 6), Skateland West (Week 7) and Turtle Cove Waterpark (Week 8).
