Hookah lounge owner disputes media reports of shooting

DEARBORN — The owner of Miami Nights Hookah Lounge, 7105 Chase Road, said media reports about a March 27 shooting inside the business are incorrect.

Hookah Lounge owner, Mustapha Koussan addressed the incident on his Facebook page claiming that “an incident that happened at Chase/Warren Friday night has no direct relationship to myself or my business.”

Police responded to the area near Warren Avenue and Chase Road where shots allegedly where fired.

Koussan said that a party had just finished at the lounge at 1:30 a.m. when two police officers entered asking if they knew what happened regarding the shooting.

“My employees were cleaning up after customers left when we learned about the shooting outside,” he said. “We didn’t hear any shots while we were inside.”

As a Dearborn police officer stood in the street investigating the shooting, he was hit by a passing vehicle. The driver was arrested, and the officer was taken to a local hospital where he was released with no major injuries.

As for the shooting, WDIV Channel 4 first reported that the shooting took place at the hookah lounge on the same night.

“A police officer was hit by a car Saturday morning while investigating a shooting at a Hookah Lounge in Dearborn,” Channel 4 reported. “Shots were fired at a Hookah Lounge near Warren Avenue and Chase Road.”

When Koussan contacted the news outlet, he was told that it the shooting did occur near the hookah lounge which is why it was used in the story.

“The news coverage was not accurate and I am in the process of complaining about the nature of how they covered the incident,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “They unfairly insinuated there was a relationship, and put my business in false light.”

Koussan said the news outlet could have used other businesses or just the intersection when reporting the shooting and not just his lounge.

“I am running my business as usual, nothing happened inside the premises. It is just another day Miami-Nights Hookah-Lounge,” Koussan wrote.

Channel 4 did not return phone calls by press time.
