Egg hunt leads spring recreation calendar

SOUTHGATE – It must be spring if the Easter Bunny is planning a visit, and the city’s 10th annual Easter Eggstravaganza will help usher in the season with events for the whole family.

The free event is co-sponsored by the Southgate Historical Foundation, Cultural, Arts and Special Events Commission and Southgate Parks and Recreation.

The Eggstravaganza begins at noon March 19 on the grounds of the Southgate Historical Museum, 14120 Dix-Toledo, with Easter Egg hunts for three age groups. The Easter Bunny will be on hand from noon until 2 p.m. for family photos.

City officials have plans for an ambitious year for its Parks and Recreation Department, with continued programs and municipal investments that last year saw the reconstruction of baseball fields, a revamped Parks and Recreation web site and increased participation.

Plans for 2016 include reconstruction of the entrance to the city’s ice arena on Reaume Parkway, courtesy of $200,000 worth of Community Development Block Grant funds. For the second year the city will partner with Downriver Family YMCA to offer “United Sports” programs to residents.
