DEARBORN — A 19-year-old Dearborn man was arrested Nov. 18 after reportedly entering a house in the 5000 block of Williamson and holding a 15-year-old boy hostage using a pair of scissors.
The boy’s parents had just left on a trip to the store and the boy’s older sister was sleeping when she woke up to the noise about 1:30 p.m., police said. She found the man in the basement, holding a pair of scissors to her brother’s neck.
She attempted to stop the man before leaving the house to locate her parents outside and call police.
When police arrived, they noticed blood on the man’s hands, and were uncertain as to who was injured initially. Officers were able to talk the man into releasing the victim.
Police continued to negotiate with the man and convinced him into surrendering peacefully.
Police took the man into custody and to a local hospital to treat a self-inflicted laceration that caused the blood on his hands.
The boy and his three siblings inside the house were uninjured.
“The officers responded quickly and utilized their training to de-escalate a life threatening situation,” Police Chief Ronald Haddad said. “The fact that this came to a peaceful resolution is a testimony to their professionalism and their commitment to protecting the public.”
