DEARBORN — A Dearborn man lost his life in an apartment building fire Aug. 23 that left 12 others homeless.

Firefighters arrived at 4:30 a.m. to the building in the 2800 block of Salina Street and extinguished the fire within 20 minutes.

Firefighters found the body of 64-year-old Mohammed Shater in his second floor apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The cause of death was most likely smoke inhalation,” Fire Chief Joe Murray said.
Two other residents jumped out of windows from the second story and were taken to Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Murray said. “Apartment residents said it is possible the fire started beneath the basement staircase.”
