TAYLOR — The city, United Auto Workers, Ford Motor Co. and the Downriver Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry partnered on Monday to distribute over 300 boxes filled with frozen Honeysuckle turkeys and everything else that would make for a great holiday dinner.

The effort was the brainchild of UAW PRC Unit President Bob Slover, a Taylor native. Slover and PRC Unit Vice President Dave LaFevre were participating in a joint UAW-Ford holiday food distribution and approached city officials about giving away the holiday turkeys Downriver. UAW Local 600 distributes food through five major organizations and distributed between 7,000 and 8,000 boxes of frozen turkeys to needy families this month.

“We want to give back to Taylor when we can,” Slover said. “We do a lot of distributions throughout the area – especially with the churches in Detroit – but we earmarked some for Taylor because we knew they were Taylor was very thankful.

“I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough,” he said. “We made a lot of people happy today.”

When he was approached by the UAW officials, Sollars made contact with the Downriver Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry in Taylor. Located at 25670 Northline Road, the 4,000-square-foot facility’s mission is to unite churches, concerned civic groups, the private sector and individual men and women of faith in a community partnership to ensure that no one goes hungry or without adequate nutrition.

Fish & Loaves serves not only Taylor, but Allen Park, Dearborn Heights, Southgate, Woodhaven and Brownstown Township.

Fish & Loaves’ next major fundraiser will be when it presents The BackBeats, an enormously popular Beatles tribute show, February 14 at the Knights of Columbus, 24900 Brest Road. Tickets are $20 each.
