Two bound over for assault, weapons charges

TRENTON – A man and a woman will face felony charges in Wayne County Circuit Court when arraigned Thursday, although attempted murder will not be among them.

Berquette Ali Wahla, 22, and Patsy Carol Gregg, 50, were charged last month with 11 felonies in what Police Chief Steve Voss called a drug- or gang-related shooting that sent a 31-year-old man to the hospital. A preliminary exam of the evidence against them was held over two days before 33rd District Court Judge Michael K. McNally, who on Wednesday bound the two over on multiple counts.

Wahla was bound over on two felony weapons charges. McNally did not continue the prosecution’s allegations of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. Gregg was bound over on five counts including assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and aggravated assault.

The two were in police custody less than 12 hours after they allegedly confronted a man in the early morning hours of Nov. 21 outside the Nottingham Knolls apartments in the 3600 block of Van Horn Road.

A physical confrontation ended with gunfire, at which time a woman called police. The woman and the victim — who was transported to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries — provided descriptions of the suspects, who were soon located at an apartment complex in Flat Rock.

Wahla previously had served three years in prison for felony firearms and assault charges, and was released in 2012.

Wahla and Gregg are scheduled to appear in Circuit Court Thursday. They both remained in custody on $250,000 and $150,000 cash bond, respectively.
