Dinner to aid children of slain woman

TAYLOR — Police continued last week sorting through tips and leads to identify the killer of Chelsea Small, who was shot last month during a robbery at a cash-advance store on Telegraph.

Friends and family are hosting a fundraising dinner to benefit Small’s two children, ages 8 and 5, from 2 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at Meadows Bar & Grill, 25018 Ecorse Road.

Organizers are arranging raffles for the event, and pizza slices will be available for $2 with proceeds going to the family, and presents for Small’s children, Josalynn and Logan, will be accepted. (A Facebook page has been established for the event and other updates: “Pizza Fundraiser for the Children of Chelsea Small”)

Donations may also be made to 5/3 Bank, addressed to the Chelsea Small Memorial Fund.

Small was killed on Nov. 12 at Advance America, 8229 Telegraph, where she worked. Police responded to the alarm and found Small, 30, who had been shot several times. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the store.

Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said during a press conference held a few days after the murder that the suspect appeared to be comfortable handling a weapon.

Police have received many leads from various tip lines — more than $25,000 in rewards have been offered for information — and have reviewed surveillance footage that showed a white man, 35 to 50 years old, medium to heavy build with dark bushy hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call Taylor police at 734-287-6611 or CrimeStoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
