HEIGHTS – No charges have been filed as police continue to investigate a shooting that left a 19-year-old woman dead in the north end of the city in the early morning hours of Nov. 2.

Renisha McBride, of Detroit, was shot to death on the front porch of a house in the 16000 block of Outer Drive.

According to published reports, McBride approached the house after being involved in an early morning traffic accident that occurred in the area. She had gone to house seeking help because her cell phone battery was dead.

In a release on the incident, Police Lt. James Serwatowski said the department had identified the person who fired the shot that killed the woman but did not say if the person was in custody or if the person was going to be charged with any wrongdoing.

Calls to Serwatowski were not returned by press time.

On Nov. 6, Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Director of Communication Maria Miller said Dearborn Heights police submitted a warrant in connection with the incident, but that the Prosecutor’s Office returned it with the request that further investigation be conducted by the police in this case.

“Based on the information provided in the warrant, we determined that we need further investigative work before deciding whether charges will be filed against the shooter or not,” Miller said.

She added that McBride’s parents were notified of the office’s position on the case.
